YOLO Bearings | Full story – Doug Glass
I was fortunate enough to be one of the top speed skaters in the world between 86-93. From Tacoma, Washington I had the pleasure to skate for Skip Peterson, mother of Legend Tom Peterson. Tom was the first Male to win gold for USA as a quad speed skater and was the founder of Hyper wheels BOSS/BSB Bearings, Senate, among other brands. While skating professionally for Team Hyper Wheels and K2 Skates respectively Tom said something to me that hit home. “I have lots of medals you can have, they don’t put food on your table”. I was 28 years old – it was that time in life that every athlete must encounter. A very hard decision but one day it hit me like a brick. It was in the middle of world team trials in Colorado Springs, CO. I qualified for a final, then found myself watching it from the stands with a strange but refreshing feeling. Tom had offered me a job heading up BSB bearings when I was ready to hang up my competitive skating career. I immediately called him after that evening of races and let him know I was done and ready to make the move. Shortly following the trials, I moved to Huntington Beach, CA. The rest is history.
The experience and opportunities under Tom/and staff of Hyper Wheels is more than I can express. Unknowingly, BOSS Bearings/BSB was only the beginning of what life had in store for me. Only 6 months with BSB Tom said, “Doug, we are flying to Texas”. We arrived Texas, the home of Ultimate Wheels, founder Mike Vouklizas . Tom had purchased Ultimate Wheels. We rented a U-Haul truck, loaded up and drove it to Huntington Beach, California. I learned on that trip I would be heading up Ultimate Wheels worldwide. Ultimate Moved into a nearby satellite office where I was about to experience more than I could have ever imagined or even dreamed of. Ultimate quickly became more than just wheels. Everything came at me so fast there were days I didn’t know what was going on. Wow, it was fun!
Ultimate expanded to roller hockey (Final Hockey), aggressive (Factory), and bearings (Bionic Bearings). I liked the name Bionic so much I used it again when we launched our bearing brand in 2011, with Nistevo Sport/Atom Wheels/Luigino.
Bearings have been important to me since I started skating in 1978. I took interest in bearings at a young age, always looking for any advantage I could. Launching Bionic Bearings in 1995 was a fun project. Experiencing the development & logistics that goes into a brand and business was a natural high. Every day was an adventure. I learned young…enjoy the journey.
All the wonderful memories and challenges we experienced over the years, Julie and I adopted YOLO as our approach to life. HENCE, YOLO Bearings. We both continue to live life in the roller skate world where we spent most of our childhood, met each other, and shaped our lives into who we are today.
You Only Live Once so skate today like there is no tomorrow.
